A Legacy Built Over Time: Ken’s 43-Year Journey
When Ken Mortensen joined the company in 1982 as a part-time yardman at Grossman’s Bargain Outlet (now Home Outlet), he couldn’t have known he was beginning a 43-year journey that would span decades, multiple store openings, and company-wide transformations.
With a strong work ethic and a drive to grow, Ken advanced steadily—moving from receiver to area supervisor, then Assistant Manager, and by 1989, Store Manager of the Bargain Outlet in Cheektowaga, NY. Over the years, he played a vital role in opening seven store locations, including 20 years at the Geneseo, NY store, where he’s served since its Grand Opening.
As a 43-year team member and recipient of the Crystal Eagle Award, which honors 40 years of service, Ken exemplifies the long-term growth and meaningful impact possible at E.C. Barton & Company.
“I have been lucky to have been a part of the various transitions throughout the years from Grossman’s to Bargain Outlet and now Home Outlet. I’ve had the pleasure of working at 7 different stores over the course of my 43-year long career, many locations of which I have been honored to open. My longest being 20 years at the Geneseo, NY store I have assisted with since its grand opening to now.
If I had to give anyone advice on seeking a career with E.C Barton I would say this; be hardworking and a team player. This company has built a foundation on pushing out the “I” and focusing on the “We”. I have felt over the course of my career starting from the most entry level position and working towards the top that the only way to do so successfully is to climb as a team. At the end of the day we’re all working towards the same goal.
I have never seen myself despite my title any more than my fellow team members. It’s that comradery that has made this company such a pleasure to work for and to be a part of. The longevity of the employees here speaks volumes to the company’s message and dedication to their employees. The benefits this company has to offer are unmatched, I’m proud to be an “owner” and believe in what the ESOP program has to offer.
To those looking for employment here, there has always been opportunity to grow within this company no matter where you start your career, I’m a testament to that. To watch those opportunities expand across the country as this company continues to grow has been exciting to see. I envy the newest generation coming into this company at such a time of growth and success and can’t wait to see it continue in the many years to come. “
